Plant Care

Light Requirements: Bright, indirect light to bright filtered light is ideal. Heliconia can tolerate some gentle morning sun, but avoid harsh direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Water Requirements: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top 1 inch of soil begins to dry, and water thoroughly until excess water drains from the bottom. Do not allow the plant to sit in standing water.

Fertilizer: Feed during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer about once a month. Follow the fertilizer's dilution instructions. Reduce feeding during fall and winter when growth naturally slows.

Soil: Use a rich, well-draining soil mix that retains some moisture. A quality tropical or houseplant potting mix amended with perlite and organic material works well. Avoid compacted soil that prevents proper drainage.

Temperature: Prefers 65-85 degrees. Keep away from cold drafts, air conditioners, and temperatures below about 55 degrees. Heliconia thrives in warm conditions.

Humidity: Prefers high humidity. A humidifier can help maintain healthy foliage, especially in dry indoor environments. Avoid placing the plant near heating vents or other sources of dry air.

Pet Safety: Non-Toxic to cats and dogs. However, pets can still experience mild stomach upset from eating plant material.

Growth Habit: Fast-growing and tropical, with large, upright leaves and colorful, long-lasting flowers. Depending on the species, Heliconia can become quite large indoors and is best given plenty of space to grow.
