Plant Care
Light Requirements: Provide bright light with several hours of direct morning or filtered sunlight each day. A bright south- or west-facing window is ideal indoors.
Water Requirements: Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. Water thoroughly when the top layer of soil begins to dry, and make sure excess water drains from the pot. Avoid allowing the soil to remain completely dry for long periods.
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced bonsai fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce feeding during fall and winter when growth slows.
Soil: Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix that provides good airflow around the roots while retaining enough moisture for healthy growth.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures around 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F.
Pet Safety: Considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, but ingestion of any plant material may cause mild stomach upset.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. It benefits from a humidifier or humidity tray, particularly during dry winter months.
Growth Habit: A compact evergreen bonsai with small glossy leaves, textured bark, and small white flowers. With proper care, it can also produce small red berries after flowering.
Bonsai Tip: Regular pruning helps maintain its compact shape and encourages branching. Fukien Tea can be sensitive to sudden changes in light, temperature, watering, or location, so keep its environment as consistent as possible.
