Plant Care
Light Requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate some gentle morning or filtered sunlight, but avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Good light helps maintain the plant's vibrant coloring and encourages healthy growth.
Water Requirements: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then empty the saucer. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings and avoid keeping the roots in soggy soil.
Fertilizer: Feed during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer about once a month. Follow the fertilizer's dilution instructions. Reduce or stop fertilizing during fall and winter.
Soil: Use a well-draining, chunky aroid soil mix. A combination of quality potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite works well. The soil should retain some moisture while allowing plenty of airflow around the roots.
Temperature: Prefers 65-85 degrees. Keep away from cold drafts, air conditioners, and temperatures below about 55 degrees.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Around 50-70% humidity is ideal, although it can adapt to average household conditions.
Pet Safety: Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
Growth Habit: Upright and slow-growing, with large, deeply serrated leaves. New leaves can emerge in shades of orange, copper, yellow, and cream before gradually developing more green coloring as they mature.
