Light Requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate some direct morning or filtered sunlight. Avoid harsh afternoon sun through glass, which can scorch the leaves. Consistent bright light helps maintain a full, healthy canopy.

Water Requirements: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then empty the saucer. Because bonsai containers are small, they can dry out faster than standard houseplants, so check the soil regularly. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.

Fertilizer: Feed during spring and summer with a balanced bonsai or houseplant fertilizer about once a month. Follow the fertilizer's dilution instructions. Reduce feeding during fall and winter when growth slows.

Soil: Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix that allows good airflow around the roots while retaining some moisture. A mix containing materials such as akadama, pumice, lava rock, or coarse perlite works well.

Temperature: Prefers 65-85 degrees. Keep away from cold drafts, air conditioners, and temperatures below about 50-55 degrees. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, which can cause leaf drop.

Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity but can adapt to average household conditions. Higher humidity can help maintain healthy foliage, especially during dry winter months.

Pet Safety: Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Ficus species can cause gastrointestinal and skin irritation.

Growth Habit: A slow- to moderate-growing tropical tree with a thick, sculptural trunk, exposed roots, and small glossy leaves. It is commonly trained as an indoor bonsai and responds well to regular pruning to maintain its compact shape.

Bonsai Tip: Avoid moving the plant frequently or making sudden changes to its environment. Ficus can naturally drop some leaves when adjusting to a new location, but consistent light, temperature, and watering will help it recover.
