Plant Care
Light Requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate some morning/ evening direct sun, but strong afternoon sun can scorch the foliage. More light generally helps maintain its color.
Water Requirements: Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, but never soggy. Water when the top 1 inch of soil begins to dry. Good drainage is important. Unlike many bromeliads, Cryptanthus primarily takes up water through its roots, so don't rely on keeping water sitting in the central rosette.
Fertilizer: Feed with a diluted balanced houseplant fertilizer about once a month during spring and summer. Use roughly 1/2-1/2 strength. Reduce or stop fertilizing during winter.
Soil: Use a loose, well-draining mix. A bromeliad mix, or a combination of potting soil + orchid bark + perlite, works well. Avoid dense soil that stays wet.
Temperature: Prefers 65-80 degrees. Keep above about 55 degrees and away from cold drafts, AC vents, and sudden temperature changes.
Pet Safety: Pet safe!
