Plant care
Light Requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate medium to lower light, although growth will be slower. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate fronds. A spot near an east- or north-facing window works well.
Water Requirements: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly until excess water drains from the bottom, then empty the saucer. Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, but never soggy. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
Fertilizer: Feed during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer about once a month. Follow the fertilizer's dilution instructions. Reduce or stop fertilizing during fall and winter.
Soil: Use a well-draining but moisture-retentive potting mix. A quality houseplant potting mix amended with perlite and a little orchid bark works well. Good drainage is important because the roots can suffer if the soil stays waterlogged.
Temperature: Prefers 65-80 degrees. Keep away from cold drafts, heating vents, and air conditioners. Avoid temperatures below about 50 degrees.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Average household humidity is usually acceptable, but it will appreciate additional humidity, especially during dry winter months. A humidifier nearby is more effective than occasional misting.
Pet Safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Growth Habit: A slow-growing, clumping palm that produces multiple slender stems with feathery green fronds. It can eventually reach several feet indoors, although a 4" nursery plant will be considerably smaller.
