Plant Care

Light Requirements: Full sun is ideal, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It can tolerate some light afternoon shade in very hot conditions, but insufficient light can result in sparse growth. This plant is best grown outdoors rather than as a permanent indoor plant.

Water Requirements: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then allow excess water to drain away. Keep the soil slightly moist but never constantly wet. Established plants are relatively drought tolerant.

Fertilizer: Feed during spring and summer with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or a diluted bonsai fertilizer. Follow the fertilizer's application instructions. Avoid heavy fertilizing during the hottest part of summer and reduce feeding in fall and winter.

Soil: Use a very well-draining, gritty soil mix. For bonsai, a mix containing akadama, pumice, lava rock, or other coarse materials works well. Avoid dense potting soil that holds excessive moisture around the roots.

Temperature: Prefers cool to moderate outdoor temperatures and is cold hardy once established. Protect container-grown plants from extreme temperature fluctuations and prolonged exposure to severe winter conditions.

Humidity: Average outdoor humidity is generally sufficient. Good air circulation is important, particularly when the plant is grown in a humid environment.

Pet Safety: Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Juniper can cause gastrointestinal upset and other symptoms if consumed in significant quantities.

Growth Habit: Low-growing and spreading, with trailing branches and dense evergreen foliage. It is commonly trained as a bonsai and can develop a beautiful, twisted trunk and branching structure with proper pruning and training.

Important: Procumbens Nana is not a typical indoor houseplant. For long-term health, it should be grown outdoors where it can receive natural sunlight and seasonal temperature changes.
