Plant Care
Light Requirements: Bright light is essential. Provide several hours of bright, direct sunlight each day when possible. Indoors, place it near a sunny south- or west-facing window. Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.
Water Requirements: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry, then water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom. During warm, bright growing periods, bananas may need frequent watering. Reduce watering somewhat during winter.
Fertilizer: Feed during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer about once every 2-4 weeks. Bananas are heavy feeders and benefit from regular nutrition during active growth. Follow the fertilizer's dilution instructions.
Soil: Use a rich, fertile, well-draining potting mix. A quality tropical or houseplant mix amended with compost and perlite works well. The soil should hold moisture while still draining excess water freely.
Temperature: Prefers 70-85 degrees. Keep away from cold drafts, air conditioners, and temperatures below about 50-55 degrees. Warm temperatures encourage the strongest growth.
Humidity: Prefers high humidity. Aim for 50-70% humidity or higher when possible. A humidifier can help prevent dry, brown leaf edges in indoor environments.
Pet Safety: Non-Toxic to cats and dogs.
Growth Habit: Fast-growing with large, tropical leaves and a strong upright growth habit. With sufficient warmth, light, water, and fertilizer, it can become quite large indoors. Pink or reddish banana fruit may develop on mature plants under suitable growing conditions.
